Long-duration contracts are principally life, annuity, non-cancelable, or guaranteed renewable accident and health, disability, and investment contracts. GAAP guidance for long-duration contracts divides life and annuity products into four categories; universal life-type, investment, traditional long-duration, and limited-payment contracts). See IG 2 for further discussion of the classification of long-duration contracts. The guidance in this section remains applicable until an entity adopts the new guidance in ASU 2018-12. For more information on the accounting for long duration contract liabilities under the ASU, see IG 5.
