PwC is pleased to offer our updated Pensions and employee benefits guide. This guide addresses the accounting for pensions and employee benefits under US GAAP. It includes guidance on the accounting for pensions, other postretirement benefits, benefits provided during employment, deferred compensation, and termination benefits.
This guide summarizes the applicable accounting literature, including relevant references to and excerpts from the FASB’s Accounting Standards Codification (the Codification). It also provides our insights and perspectives, interpretative and application guidance, illustrative examples, and discussion on emerging practice issues.
This guide should be used in combination with a thorough analysis of the relevant facts and circumstances, review of the authoritative accounting literature, and appropriate professional and technical advice.
References to US GAAP
Definitions, full paragraphs, and excerpts from the FASB’s Accounting Standards Codification are clearly labelled. In some instances, guidance was cited with minor editorial modification to flow in the context of the PwC Guide. The remaining text is PwC’s original content.

  • Question PEB 4-1 was added to illustrate the accounting for a pension plan amendment resulting from litigation.

PEB 3, Net periodic benefit cost
  • Content in PEB 3.2.7.2 was moved to PEB 3.2.6.4 and updated to clarify the definition of an "inactive" plan participant.

Revisions made in December 2021
PEB 4, Amendments, curtailments, and settlements
  • PEB 4.10 was updated to discuss when a plan should be remeasured upon a plan division.
  • PEB 4.11 was added to include a discussion of the accounting for a pension in a spinoff.

  • The order of certain sections within PEB 2 was rearranged.
