Nuclear decommissioning requirements typically represent one of the most significant asset retirement obligations for nuclear licensees. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is responsible for overseeing the decommissioning of all nuclear power plants in the United States. The NRC has explicit requirements related to decommissioning nuclear power plants, including cleanup of contaminated plant systems and structures and removal of radioactive fuel. The NRC also specifies one of three methods that must be used for the decommissioning process and requires decommissioning to be completed within 60 years of a facility’s shutdown. Accounting for asset retirement obligations is discussed in PPE 3.
